NDP to introduce bill calling for ban of thermal coal exports as Canadian output booms

Mia Rabson of The Canadian Press reports that Canadian exports of the kind of coal used to make electricity hit an eight-year high in 2022, despite a 2021 election promise to ban them by the end of the decade. Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault said he is “quite concerned” about increasing thermal coal exports and said Canadians will be hearing from the government on the topic in coming months. NDP environment critic Laurel Collins called the increase in exports “shocking” and is introducing a private member’s bill to outlaw all exports unless the Environment Minister issues a special permit.
