Canada 2020 Advisory Board Chair, and former Governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, Mark Carney speaks during the Canada 2020 Net-Zero Leadership Summit in Ottawa on Wednesday, April 19, 2023.

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney - often touted as a successor to Justin Trudeau as federal Liberal leader - delivered a major speech in Ottawa recently and offered a glimpse into what his economic policies might look like. As Toronto Star columnist Susan Delacourt reports, Carney said Canada must start by strengthening the basics like affordable housing, universal health care, education and a clean economy, then building on those foundations for the future. He appeared to be carving out a middle ground between Trudeau’s Liberalism and Poilievre’s Conservative policies.
