Minister of Labour and Seniors Steven MacKinnon swears the oath at a cabinet swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, on Friday, July 19, 2024.

Steve MacKinnon was sworn into cabinet as Canada’s new minister of labour, after the surprise resignation of Seamus O’Regan.

MacKinnon, who has been the member of parliament for Gatineau in Quebec since 2015, is regarded as a centrist Liberal who ran the Liberal Party as its national director under Prime Minister Paul Martin two decades ago. He takes the post at a time of growing labour unrest that has required the government to step into negotiations regularly.

MacKinnon had been serving in cabinet as House Leader on an interim basis. O’Regan said he is stepping down for family reasons.
