Freeland releases list of Chinese steel and aluminum products under tariff
The Canadian government announced the full list of Chinese steel and aluminum products that will be subject to a 25 per cent surtax. The tariffs will take effect on Oct. 22.
“We are moving in lock-step with key international partners to protect Canadian workers and businesses in our steel and aluminum sectors from China’s intentional, state-directed policy of overcapacity and oversupply,” Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement. “Canada is taking decisive action to level the playing field and protect Canadian workers and investments in Canadian industry.”
The move on steel and aluminum comes on the same day that a new 100 per cent levy on electric cars came into force. The federal government is also considering surtaxes on batteries and battery parts, semiconductors, solar products and critical minerals. Consultations on that surtax end Oct. 10.
