Theo Argitis: How much impact will Canada’s retaliatory tariffs have?

Theo Argitis, The Hub Editor-at-Large for Business and Economics, wrote this week: “One big question is how much we should take the retaliatory threats at face value. Which Canadian actions are credible enough to influence Trump’s strategy — and which are not?”

He notes that Eurasia Group’s Ian Bremmer touched on these credibility issues in a controversial analysis last week on how Trump’s trade moves are affecting U.S. allies. Bremmer argued that Canada and Mexico are more likely to bend to the U.S. because they don’t have a credible strategy to push back.

“Prime Minister Mark Carney has sent mixed signals on how costly a fight he’s prepared to wage,” Argitis writes in his discussion of how the global tariffs are hitting stock markets, which tariffs Canada will still face despite some exemptions, and navigating the economic relationship with our southern neighbour in the daily Hub election podcast.
