The new powers at the Competition Bureau to compel business to provide market data is raising fears about compliance cost, according to Allan Freeman in the Canadian Bar Association’s National magazine. The new powers were included in legislation last year following complaints by Competition Commissioner Matthew Boswell that he was unable to gather sufficient data during his study of the grocery sector’s competitive practices. Some competition experts, however, are warning these powers could be abused by authorities and impose a heavy burden on business.
