Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD expects to enter the Canadian market, the Globe and Mail reports.

BYD Co., the Chinese electric-vehicle maker,  expects to enter the Canadian market, the Globe and Mail’s Steven Chase reported, citing a filing with a federal regulator. Chinese-brand vehicles aren’t for sale yet in Canada and may face challenges getting certified, but the biggest potential obstacle may be tariffs under consideration by the federal government, Chase said. The Chinese company filed notice with the federal registry of lobbyists this month that they are talking to Ottawa to advise the government on matters related to the expected market entry of BYD, which already sells electric buses in Canada, according to the Globe report, adding that Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is considering proposals to impose significant duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
