Canada's foreign student push 'mismatched' job market, data shows: CBC

Figures from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada obtained by CBC News show that business programs account for 27 per cent of study permits for international students, while just six per cent were granted for fields like health sciences and medicine and only 1.25 per cent for trades and vocational programs. Experts tell the CBC’s Mike Crawley and Valerie Ouellet that the figures show that governments and post-secondary institutions have not focused on recruitment based on filling pressing labour market needs. Immigration Minister Marc Miller said he will raise the issue of better matching Canada’s intake of international students to labour gaps when he meets with his provincial and territorial counterparts on Friday.
