Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne has been courting European and U.S. grocery chains to set up shop in Canada to increase competition, but industry experts say it would require big operational scale and investment to break into the country’s market. Five giants – Loblaw, Metro, Sobeys, Walmart and Costco – now make up nearly three-quarters of the Canadian market. As Jenna Benchetrit of CBC News reports, foreign grocers would find it costly to set up a supply chain across the country, and loyalty programs from existing chains might make it tough to entice customers to make the switch.
