The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) has appointed Caitlin Gubbels as the new global head of private equity, succeeding Suyi Kim, who will leave the pension fund in October after 17 years.

Gubbels, who joined CPPIB in 2010, previously led the private equity funds business and will now oversee the $136.8-billion private equity unit, including direct and Asia investments.

Private equity is CPPIB’s largest asset class, comprising 31 per cent of its total fund. Despite challenges like high interest rates, which affected returns, the unit earned a 9.6 per cent return last fiscal year.

Over the past 10 years, CPPIB has achieved an average annual return of 9.1 per cent.
