Risk of stranded LNG assets is 'real,' Wilkinson says

Bloomberg News reports that Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson welcomes the recent U.S. decision to suspend approvals for LNG exports, and noted there are “real” risks that infrastructure will be stranded as a result. In an interview with Bloomberg in Paris, Wilkinson said the U.S. is “doing the right thing” by following Canada’s move as a way to help fight climate change. There is a debate over LNG’s role in the future of energy, with advocates contending it’s crucial for getting developing nations to stop using coal and enabling Europe to power its economy without Russian gas, while environmentalists warn that building the massive infrastructure that’s needed to ship LNG could mean it’s burned for generations to come.
