Canada has lost its dominant position as the largest exporter of peas to China.

Russia has become the top exporter of peas to China, overtaking Canada in less than two years after gaining access to the $1 billion market, Gleb Bryanski at Reuters reported, citing data from Russia's Union of Grain Exporters.

Russian peas now account for almost half of China’s total imports, while Canada's share fell to around 45 per cent, from about 95 per cent previously, Reuters reported.

Russia is quickly gaining a larger share of China’s agricultural products import market, as trade tensions simmer between China and Western countries, and as Russia faces western sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine. Russian exports of Barley to China have surged more than five-fold so far this year, and Russia is also eyeing a 10 per cent share of China’s pork imports, Reuters reported.
