The Globe and Mail’s Konrad Yakabuski takes a deeper look at the coming clash between the federal government and Quebec over the protection of endangered caribou herds in the province.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is threatening a federal order to address imminent threats faced by the three at-risk Boreal Caribou populations. The Quebec government of Premier Francois Legault has accused the federal government of overstepping its jurisdiction.

Yakabuski asserts the dispute is shaping up as a major political issue in federal politics as well, with the Conservatives seeking to exploit the matter to bolster their prospects in the province.
