A new Trump administration is expected to impose blanket tariffs on products entering the U.S., including from its largest trading partner Canada.

Canada should prepare itself for pressure from a new Trump administration on sensitive fronts including trade, migration and military spending, the CBC’s Alexander Panetta and Mark Gollom reported. This will follow Trump's “animating principle” of getting tough with allies who have grown too economically and militarily reliant on the U.S., according to the CBC report. Trump plans to impose a minimum 10 per cent tariff on all imported products, which could reduce Canada’s GDP by as much as 5 per cent, the CBC reported, adding it’s possible Trump will announce tariffs on everything early next year, then use them as leverage to “force other countries to reorient certain policies.”
