Ottawa to require oil, gas companies to cut carbon emissions by one-third: CP

Ottawa will require oil and gas producers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by about one-third within eight years.

The Canadian government will require oil and gas producers to cut greenhouse gas emissions by about one-third over the next eight years, CP’s Mia Rabson and Nick Murray reported, citing new regulations published this week. In addition, the government will establish a new cap-and-trade system that Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says will reward lower-emitting producers and incentivize higher-polluting ones to do more, according to the CP report, which noted the regulations are still in draft form and are about two-years behind schedule. CP also said the new regulations were “met with dismay” by industry leaders and are “further straining relations between Ottawa and the Alberta government.
