Freeland defends higher taxes on those who 'complain ... bitterly'


Some big and surprising news in Budget 2024 is a tax hike on profits from capital gains — a way for the government to pay for billions in big-ticket spending, especially on housing measures. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said it’s simply “asking the wealthiest Canadians to pay their fair share.” NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh had called for a windfall tax for corporations with “excess profits,” saying it’s contributing to the affordability crisis, Catherine Lévesque of The Financial Post reports.
