Shell Canada moving ahead with carbon capture projects

The Shell Scotford Complex

Shell Canada announced on Wednesday that it will be moving ahead with two carbon capture and storage projects, breathing new life into the space.

The oil producer confirmed in a statement that it’s made a final decision on proceeding with Polaris, a carbon capture project at its Scotford refinery and chemicals complex near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The project is designed to capture about 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the facility, the company said.

Shell also announced it will move ahead with the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub in partnership with ATCO EnPower that will initially be used to store the carbon captured by Polaris.

Both projects are expected to be operational by 2029.

The investment should bring some momentum back to the country’s carbon capture ambitions, which had been deflated by an announcement earlier this year that Capital Power Corp. would be pausing its carbon capture plans, saying they were not economically feasible.
