Chart of the day: Canada’s population now exceeds 41 million
Canada’s population growth continues unabated, even as concerns mount over the housing affordability crisis. The number of people living in the country jumped by almost 243,000 in the first quarter, by 1.3 million over the past 12 months and now exceeds 41 million.
Almost all of the increase over the past year was driven by flows from international migrants — one third of these were immigrants and the other two-thirds non-permanent residents such as foreign students and temporary workers. The government has pledged to stem the flow of non-permanent residents over the next three years.
